- Not sure which listing format to use? Check which formats other sellers use. Click the "Advanced Search" option next to the search box. Enter keywords for the item you're selling and tick the "Completed items" box, then click "Search" to see a list of already-sold items. You'll be able to find out:
- final prices paid by buyers
- which listing format sellers used for those items
- whether auction-style listings tended to generate a higher price than Buy It Now
- whether any listing formats failed to attract buyers
- how the time and day the auction ended affected the final price.
For items that ended without a sale, think about what the seller could've done to improve the listing. Successful completed listings give you ideas for what to include in your item description. You can also use Marketplace Research for more detailed information on prices achieved and volume sold under different formats. Get more guidance on Listing Formats.
- Experiment with low starting price, no reserve, long-duration listings. This strategy:
- gets plenty of bidders watching your items
- encourages bids near the beginning of the auction
- saves you money on insertion fees.
If this sounds like a risky strategy, try it out with a few over-stock items you'd lost hope of selling. If you're still worried, watch other low starting price listings for items similar to yours.
- Carefully plan your listing's end time and duration - most bids come in at the end of the auction so make sure your auction-style listings end when potential buyers are online and ready to buy. For example, business buyers are more likely to be online during office hours in the middle of the week. Home buyers tend to be online at weekends and in the evening, for example on Sunday evenings. For a small fee, you can schedule your listings to start whenever you want them to, ensuring they always end at a busy time.
- Selling lots of the same item? - there's no need to list each one individually. Use a multiple-item, fixed-price listing and buyers can choose how many of the item they want to buy from you. Remember items have to be exactly the same as each other for them to be sold in a multiple-item listing.
- Too many items to upload each one individually? Use an eBay listing tool such as Turbolister, which lets you quickly upload a large number of items. Also, Selling Manager and Selling Manager Pro let you manage your listings easily, and even automate processes to save you time.
- Familiarise yourself with eBay policies. If an eBay member reports you for breaking the rules your listings could be removed. Here's some of the most important policies you should know about:

- Not sure what to sell? Check eBay Pulse to see what buyers are looking for on eBay right now.
- Take great pictures. Remember that buyers can't inspect the item in person before they bid or buy. The more pictures you provide, the more trust the buyer will have in the item.
- Answer emails promptly and be friendly. People like to know there's a human behind the listing. Be prompt and friendly in your communications and you'll get great feedback and repeat business.
