What is Checkout? Checkout is a service from eBay that helps buyers
and sellers complete their eBay purchases and sales. eBay's Checkout
service is completely optional for buyers and sellers.
Do I have to pay to use Checkout? No. Checkout is a FREE service for both buyers and sellers.
What are the benefits of Checkout?
For sellers, Checkout helps you:
- Receive payment faster - By providing buyers with
additional costs like postage & handling when you list an item,
buyers can pay you immediately once a listing ends. Also,
if you provide your payment address, Checkout will display this address to buyers if they need
to send payment to you.
- Save time - Checkout calculates the total amount
for buyers and helps them send all their information to
you, including postage address, in one email.
For buyers, Checkout helps you:
- Complete your purchases faster - With
Checkout, you'll know how much to pay the seller and where to
send your payment once a listing ends.
- Pay immediately - Use eBay Payments to pay the seller immediately once a listing ends.
- Save time - Checkout allows you to store your postage addresses for future purchases.
Is Checkout required for all listings?
No. Checkout is completely optional for all selling formats including Auctions
and Fixed Price. Buyers and sellers can
choose to use Checkout to purchase or list an
item.
If I use Checkout, does it mean I have to use eBay Payments?
No. Neither the buyer nor the seller are required to use eBay Payments in order to use Checkout. Checkout helps buyers and sellers exchange information and supports almost any payment method the seller accepts.
If the seller does not accept eBay Payments, eBay Payments will not be available to the buyer during Checkout.

Other third party selling tools:
We encourage you to contact your service provider to find out how your tool
might be affected.
I'm a seller and I want to use Checkout. Do I have to provide postage costs when I list an
item?
No. Sellers who would like
to use Checkout are not required to include postage costs when
listing an item; however, providing postage costs upfront does help buyers pay you once
a listing ends.
If you choose not to provide postage costs when listing an item, you can still use
Checkout to provide these additional costs after a listing ends. Buyers can also still use
Checkout to send their postage address to you.
Please note that if you update postage costs
such as postage and handling after a listing ends, the buyer reserves
his/her right to accept the amounts you submit if the total changes without probable
cause.
As
a seller, when is my Payment Address displayed to the
buyer? The buyer will only see your Payment Address for Auction and Fixed
Price items when:
- The seller's Checkout preference is set to allow Checkout, AND
-
The seller provides a payment address, AND
- The buyer goes through Checkout and selects to
pay using cheque, postal order, or "other" method.
Please note that sellers with an eBay Shop are
required to have a Payment Address on file.
As a seller, how do I turn off Checkout for a
listing?
To turn off Checkout, go to
the My eBay Selling tab and click on the "Update Checkout Preferences"
link to go to the Checkout Preferences page.
On this page, select the option that says "No, do
not allow buyers to use eBay's Checkout after a listing ends" to turn off
Checkout.
As a buyer, if I use Checkout to ask the seller for additional information, am
I required to use Checkout to complete my purchase?
No. Buyers and sellers can use Checkout to help exchange information, but are not required to use Checkout to
complete a purchase, unless the buyer selects to pay with eBay Payments.
If you use Checkout to
ask the seller for additional information, the seller will either
respond to you directly, or will use Checkout to provide you with additional
information.
