3.5 MILLION ROGUE BRITS FLOUT HOSEPIPE BAN WASTING BILLIONS OF LITRES
09 August, 2006

Despite widespread bans and drought orders almost 3.5 million people in the no hosepipe zone have deliberately broken the ban to keep their cars clean and the gardens green.

The top five hosepipe ban flouts are:

  1. Watering the flower beds (35%)
  2. Refilling the paddling/swimming pool (27%)
  3. Washing the car (26%)
  4. Watering the vegetable patch (21%)
  5. Watering the lawn (17%)

Other research findings from www.ebaymotors.co.uk
  • Despite £1,000 fine, 39% say they don't care who catches them and would break the ban at any time
  • 23% admit breaking the ban in the middle of the night to avoid being caught!
  • 21% of the South East have no idea that they live in a hosepipe ban region and 17% have made no changes to their car washing behaviour since the bans were introduced.

White Van Man the next VAN-Gogh?
  • An enterprising white-van man from Enfield has found a novel way to make his filthy van look good on eBay Motors without breaking the hosepipe ban
  • Stewart King (32) has turned his White Ford Transit into a work of (grime) art with a tribute to his heroes 'Dirty' Christina Aguilera plus football stars Becks, Ronaldinho and Rooney out of dirt.
  • The van, listed earlier today on ebaymotors.co.uk has already received 6 bids since he listed the van this morning.

Drought busting in 2020?
  • With Met Office predicting rising temperatures in coming years, ebaymotors.co.uk commissioned motoring designers MIRA, to design a drought busting solution for one of the biggest ban problems - residential car washing.
  • The 'Car Wash 2020' could feature in driveways across the UK's neighbourhoods in the future, causing a major public rethink on water saving.
  • The inflatable car wash unit uses just four litres of recyclable water compared to 135 litres used when washing a car by hosepipe.
  • The design is inspired by a 'dishwasher effect' using a mixture of steam and water mist. Images of this future thinking concept are available.
