eBay for Charity provides an easy way to support charities while buying and selling on eBay.co.uk. Any seller can donate 10% to 100% of the proceeds from a sale to a charity of their choice. Buyers can easily find and purchase these items knowing they are supporting a worthy cause. Charities are also able to sell their own items directly on the eBay marketplace. Charities further benefit from eBay fee donations, Gift Aid (where applicable) and extra visibility on eBay.co.uk. eBay.co.uk has partnered with MissionFish (itself a UK registered charity) to administer the programme.
There are two main ways charities can use eBay for Charity to fundraise:
The first step to get started is to certify your organisation with MissionFish , the dedicated solution provider for eBay for Charity.
eBay have selected MissionFish a U.K. registered charity and non-profit organisation, as the dedicated solution provider for eBay for Charity. MissionFish have five years of experience helping organisations fundraise through online trading in the U.S., and in 2002 we invited them to help us build a programme to offer the eBay.co.uk community an opportunity to support charities through buying and selling on eBay. Their valuable support includes: certifying charities to participate in the eBay for Charity programme; collecting donations from eBay sellers and claiming Gift Aid for those gifts, and dispersing the monies (donations and Gift Aid) to the benefiting charities.
All eBay for Charity listings are integrated into the main eBay site, so buyers can find them with ease. Additionally, the programme has several unique features that help your listings stand out:

Yes, eBay for Charity listings appear with all other listings on eBay. Additionally, eBay for Charity listings appear within the eBay for Charity search engine and on the selected charity beneficiary's "home page" on MissionFish, ultimately giving sellers three listing venues.
All eBay sellers who have a current account in good standing on eBay and MissionFish can create eBay for Charity listings. Sellers must select PayPal or a credit card as one of the buyer payment options; however, this is not required for Motors listings. Note: If you would like to participate in the eBay for Charity program, your browser must be JavaScript enabled.
eBay for Charity is integrated in the Sell Your Item (SYI) form and Turbo Lister. For detailed instructions, please see the "How to Sell for Charity" page. Note: If you have not registered with MissionFish, you will be prompted to create a MissionFish account to proceed with the listing. You will only have to complete this registration process once. Community sellers will need to provide credit card information to guarantee payment of your donations, and must consent to terms in the MissionFish User Agreement. Charities need to enter their eBay user ID into their MissionFish charity account so they will not be charged the £2 minimum donation required for Community Selling and can bypass donation processing. You must also consent to terms in the MissionFish User Agreement.
All UK organisations with charitable status are welcome to participate; however, groups involved in the promotion of terrorism, hate, racial intolerance, or illegal activities will be disallowed.
To be included in the charity directory, you must certify your organisation with MissionFish, the dedicated solution provider for eBay for Charity. You will need to provide a working email address, an electronic copy of your logo (jpg or gif format, 20kb maximum), a mission statement of 212 characters maximum (about 40 words), proof of your Gift Aid eligibility, and a voided cheque from your bank (used to establish electronic funds transfer of donations from Community Selling). MissionFish will send you a confirmation email once they have completed the certification process. This may take up to one business day and includes verification that your organisation is Gift Aid eligible, and meets our community standards by not promoting violence, hate, or illegal activities.
When an eBay for Charity item is listed to benefit your organisation, MissionFish will notify you according to your account preferences. If you decide that you would not like to benefit from the sale of an item on eBay, you may request that item be cancelled through your MissionFish account. The item will be cancelled within 24 hours, and the seller will receive an email notification from eBay as well as a credit for his or her selling fees.
After the close of an eBay for Charity listing, the seller receives payment from the buyer. MissionFish collects funds from the seller and holds the donation while it is eligible to be refunded to the seller. MissionFish then re-grants the gift (minus a small deduction to cover costs) to the designated charity on the 30th of the second month after the listing has closed. MissionFish also collects and delivers Gift Aid on the seller's donation, if the seller made a Gift Aid declaration.
Upon joining the programme, charities and sellers each receive a password-protected Web-based account provided by MissionFish. Sellers can see a report of their donations, and charities can see reports on all of their fundraising activities, including funds raised from both Community Selling and Direct Selling.
You may always suggest that a charity join eBay for Charity by filling out the Recommend a Charity form on MissionFish. This will generate an automatic email invitation from you to the organisation.
An eBay for Charity item may only benefit one charity organisation at this time.
If your item sells, £2 or 10% of your item's final selling price, whichever is greater, is required for each eBay for Charity listing in order to ensure that a substantial gift will reach the charity organisation. Note: This donation minimum does not apply if you are a charity organisation selling items on your own behalf after you have added your eBay Seller ID as a Direct Seller in your MissionFish charity account.
All items on eBay are subject to the same standard selling fees. There are no additional fees for sellers to list eBay for Charity items. When MissionFish collects and disburses donations from Community Selling, there is a small amount deducted to cover processing costs. This is based on a tiered deduction structure, the details of which are in the table below. The MissionFish deduction will normally average about 10% of all seller donations. On average, charities will receive 10% to 15% over and above the amount donated by a seller through Gift Aid and eBay Fee Donations.
*MissionFish deducts 3% of the donation above £1,000 when you make your donation by Banker's Draft or BACS transfer. *Examples assume: the seller chooses to donate 100% of their sale proceeds and completes a Gift Aid declaration. Note: When a charity is selling an item on its own behalf ("Direct Selling"), it collects funds directly from the buyer. MissionFish does not process the donation, and there are subsequently no deductions. You can find more examples in the MissionFish "Help - Money" page
To reflect the generosity of the eBay community's support of charitable organisations, eBay will donate the same percentage of its Final Value Fees as the seller donates of the final selling price. Charities will need to pay Final Value Fees for each item and eBay.co.uk will subsequently donate Final Value Values in a lump-sum each quarter. Also, charities participating in the programme will soon be able to apply for a special discounted charity-only rate with PayPal - they can apply at www.paypal.co.uk/charity.
Both eBay and MissionFish are committed to the fair and efficient management of donated funds. MissionFish, a registered UK charity, has the sole responsibility of collecting donations from sellers and redistributing the funds to benefiting charities. When you register on MissionFish to list an eBay for Charity item, you will create a seller account and place your credit card on file the same way that you do on eBay. After your item sells, you collect payment from the buyer as usual. MissionFish will send you an email notification that includes the exact donation amount due and payment instructions. A credit card is the fastest and easiest way to pay your donation; however, MissionFish also accepts payments by Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT) and bank-certified cheques for donations greater than £200.00. If you are not able to pay your donation by the second Monday after your listing ends, MissionFish will charge your credit card. MissionFish then forwards the gift (minus a small deduction to cover processing costs) to the designated charity on the 30th of the second month after your listing has ended and also collects and delivers Gift Aid on the seller's donation, if the seller made a Gift Aid declaration.
When a seller files an Unpaid Item dispute and receives a Final Value Fee credit from eBay, they will also be able to receive a refund on their eBay for Charity donation from MissionFish. The deadline for requesting a donation refund is 42 days after your listing ends. MissionFish will not grant refund requests after this date. If you have an Unpaid Item:
If a buyer returns an item and/or you provide a full refund: You may request a donation refund by completing the refund request form on MissionFish. Once MissionFish receives confirmation from the buyer, they will provide your donation refund, minus the £2 minimum donation, as a charge back to your credit card (or whatever alternative payment method you may have chosen). When the charge back is complete, MissionFish will send you a confirmation email. |
