Caring for Your Collection

Many of the rules that apply to displaying your antiques also apply to caring for them. Some antiques are more durable than others. Therefore, it is important to know which ones are fragile and how to care for them properly. What is often good for one antique will destroy another, so research is the key. The following is a list of general guidelines to assist you in taking care of your antiques:
- Ceramics should be dusted with a soft brush. Do not use a cloth since there is a greater potential for breaking off a piece of the antique.
- Glass should be dusted with a soft brush on a daily basis.
- Framed art should be dusted with a lint-free cloth or feather duster. If the frame is really dirty, do not spray or soak any part of the surface. Water could seep through and ruin the artwork.
- Metal cleaning methods vary widely by type of metal. For example, copper can withstand scratchy powder cleaners and boiling water; silver requires a much softer touch and high-quality plate powder.
- Wood should never get wet. Do not even use a damp cloth. Wooden surfaces should be wiped with a dry, soft cloth.
