There are many effective
techniques for capturing a photo of your item and saving it on your
computer:
Digital Camera
A digital camera is just like a regular camera except
that it doesn't use film; instead, it stores photos digitally in its
memory. Once you take a photo of your item, you can connect your camera to
your computer and save the photo to the hard drive.
Regular Camera and Scanner
Take a picture with your
regular camera, get it developed, and use a scanner to convert the picture
to a digital image. The scanner will then ask you to choose a location and
file name to save the image. If the item you are selling is small and flat
(like baseball cards or stamps), you can just put them directly on the
scanner. Remember that you must save the photo in either a .gif or .jpg
format in order to use it on eBay.
Regular Camera and Digital Film Processor
There are a couple of
methods you may use in transferring images from regular film to your
computer. 1) You can ask your local digital film processor to save copies
of your photos onto a computer disk (CD) to take home and transfer to your
computer, or 2) you can ask your film processing service if they use Kodak
PhotoNet, a service that can digitally post copies of your photos to the
Kodak PhotoNet.com website. You can then copy your photos from the
PhotoNet website to your computer to use whenever you like.

While you can usually
just point and shoot to take photos of your items, here are a few
tips you can use to make your items really stand out:
- Use natural light
whenever possible. If your item has any shiny surfaces a flash can
reflect back at the camera and distort the photo.
- Use a plain
background to make your item stand out; however, don't use a pure
white background as this tends to wash away colors and creates too
much contrast in the photo.
- Consider taking a
close-up of a section of the item in addition to the entire object
in order to give buyers a better idea of the item's actual
condition.
