Such VAT Identification Numbers start with a country-specific prefix followed by a maximum of 12 alphanumerical digits or capital characters. The chart below sets out the format of VAT Identification Numbers.
If your tax authority has not yet provided you with a VAT Identification Number that meets these requirements and you are entitled to VAT exemption under applicable law and regulation, please contact your local tax office to get a VAT Identification Number described here.
The relevant authority for the UK is Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs and for Ireland, the Irish Revenue Commissioners.
