Titles

The UK Honours (Prevention of Abuses) Act 1925 makes it a criminal offence to sell or buy, or to attempt to sell or buy, certain British titles.

The following titles are not permitted to be listed for sale on eBay: Duke and Duchess, Marquess and Marchioness, Earl and Countess, Viscount and Viscountess, Baron and Baroness (called Lord and Lady of Parliament in Scotland) and Knighthoods or Baronets.

Lordships of the Manor may be listed for sale on eBay. However sellers must not suggest in their listings that these manorial lordships are aristocratic titles or that the buyer will be entitled to be addressed as "Lord", "Lady" or any of the above titles. This is misleading and may also be in breach of the Trade Descriptions Act 1968.

Scottish Feudal Baronies may be listed for sale on eBay provided that the seller makes it clear that these relate to Scotland and that the listing is not misleading in any way.

Article 40.2.2 of the Irish Constitution stipulates that no title of nobility or of honour may be accepted by any citizen except with prior approval of the Government.
