Protect your password and account information

Take the following steps to protect your password and your account.

Important: eBay employees will never ask you for your password.

  • Create a different password for each online account that you have. Avoid using the same password for your eBay account and your email account, or using the same password that you use on other websites.

  • Create a more secure password by using a combination of letters and numbers.

  • Change your password often, at least every 30 to 60 days.

Note: Before you change your password, make sure your email address is current. eBay uses this email address to complete the password change process (for more information, see Updating Your Registration Information). To change your password now, go to the Change Your Password page.

  • Do not share your password with others.

  • Review the privacy policies of third parties that offer you services to determine how your information will be protected.

  • If you believe that someone has obtained your password, change it immediately and review our Account Theft information page.

  • Beware of fake eBay emails and websites. These are spoof emails and typically ask you to submit personal information such as your credit card number or your eBay password. These emails often contain links to Web pages that will request that you sign-in and submit information. If you receive or suspect that you have received such an email, do not respond to it or click the links. For more information, see Reporting Spoof (Fake) Emails.

  • Before entering you eBay password, make sure you are signing into a genuine eBay Website. If you're signing in to the eBay site, only enter your password at a web address (URL) that begins with https://signin.ebay.co.uk/ or https://signin.ebay.ie/. For a complete list of international sites, see Recognising Spoof (Fake) Websites.
