Offering postage discounts

Postage discounts let you offer buyers savings on P&P when they purchase items from you. Offering a postage discount helps promote your item and encourages buyers to buy additional items from you.

Listings with postage discounts appear to buyers with the message "Save on P&P." When your postage discounts are set up and activated, eBay will automatically calculate the discount and deduct it from the total cost. The postage discount will be shown to your buyers when they complete payment.

For fixed price items on eBay.co.uk priced below £350, if you specify a postage cost and PayPal as the only payment method offered, buyers who click the Buy it now button will be asked to pay immediately. If you provide your buyers with instructions for receiving postage discounts, you may want to guide your buyers to add all the items they want to purchase from you to their shopping basket. If you don't use the Combined postage discounts feature, buyers must also click the Request total button in the shopping basket to request a new invoice reflecting their postage discount.

Creating flat postage rules

Flat postage rules let you offer discounts to buyers who purchase more than one of your items. You can charge for delivering the item with the highest P&P cost, and then add an additional lower cost for each additional item that they purchase from you. You can also subtract P&P costs for each additional item purchased, or offer free P&P on additional items. Select the Add an amount for each additional item option, and then enter a P&P cost for each additional item.

To create flat postage rules:
  1. Click My eBay at the top of most eBay pages. You may need to sign in.

  2. Place your pointer over the Account tab and select Site preferences.

  3. Click the Show link to the right of the Postage and packaging preferences section.

  4. Click the first Edit link.

  5. Click the Edit link in the Flat postage rule section.

  6. From the drop-down menu, choose what you'd like to do—add an amount to dispatch each additional item or subtract an amount.

Tip: If you choose to subtract an amount you can choose to subtract a fixed amount or a percentage of the P&P cost.

  7. If you want to create different profiles with different flat postage rules, click the Add profile link and fill in the details.

  8. Click the Next button.

  9. Review your changes and click the Save button. The changes will be applied immediately to your current listings.

Creating promotional postage rules

Promotional postage rules apply to all listings that have combined P&P discounts. When buyers qualify for your promotional postage rule, the promotion takes priority over existing flat postage rules.

When you create a promotional postage rule, you can offer buyers special discounts if they buy multiple items or spend a certain amount. For example, you can create a rule that gives buyers free P&P as long as they spend at least £25 and buy 2 items. You can also charge a maximum P&P amount for a single order. For example, you can specify that a buyer be charged no more than £5.00 for P&P if the buyer purchases more than one item from you.

To create a promotional postage rule:
  1. Click My eBay at the top of most eBay pages. You may need to sign in.

  2. Place your pointer over the Account tab and select Site preferences.

  3. Click the Show link to the right of the Postage and packaging preferences section.

  4. Click the first Edit link.

  5. Click the Edit link in the Promotional postage rule section.

  6. On the next page, choose the kind of promotional rule you want to create. You can:

    • Offer a discount for a multi-item purchase that totals a certain cost

    • Offer discounted or free P&P for buyers who purchase multiple items from you

    • Prevent P&P costs from exceeding a set amount for any order

  7. Click the Next button.

  8. Review your changes and click the Save button. The changes will be applied immediately to your current listings.

Managing profiles

Profiles are a way for you to manage your postage discounts. Give each discount a profile a name so you can quickly select a profile when you're listing your item.

For example, you can create one flat postage rule named "Light items" and specify that each additional item will cost £1.00 to post. You can also create a flat postage rule called "Heavy items" and specify that each additional item will cost £3.00 to post.

To create a combined postage discount rule with a profile name:
  1. Click My eBay at the top of most eBay pages. You may need to sign in.

  2. Place your pointer over the Account tab and select Site Preferences.

  3. Click the Show link to the right of the Postage and packaging preferences section.

  4. Click the Create or Edit link under the P&P discount rules to add rules or make changes.

  5. If you want to add profiles to your rule, click the Create profiles (advanced) link.

  6. Enter a name for your profile that's easy for you to remember.

  7. Enter the information for your discount, and click the Finish button.

Note: You can delete a profile by deleting its name in your rules. When you delete a profile name, listings that are associated with that name will no longer have postage discounts. However, if the listing has any activity, such as a bid, then the postage discount will still apply.
