With such a huge range of digital cameras available, the choice can be daunting. So let us guide you in finding the right model for you.

Step One: Choose the Resolution
The first stage is to decide on the resolution you want your camera to have. This will depend on what you want to do with the finished images.

Resolution is defined by the dimensions of the image - say 1600x1200 - or by the total number of pixels in the image. On cameras with a higher resolution, this is described in megapixels, with one megapixel equal to one million pixels.

It is worth remembering that for producing images for use in your eBay listings and for other email and internet use, a relatively low resolution model is more than adequate.

If you’re looking for high quality prints, then a one megapixel camera will produce good results at 6”x4” size – and the larger you want your prints to be, the more pixels you’ll need.

Step Two: Additional Features
Just like some normal cameras, digital cameras come with a range of added features. Here are some of the main ones to look out for:

  • LCD screen. Because the image is captured electronically, an LCD screen makes it possible to review your image immediately - and if you don't like the result, just delete it from memory and take it again.
  • Memory Card Compatability. This is preferable to internal memory only because if a card becomes full you simply remove it from the camera, insert another one, and carry on shooting.
  • Optical Zoom Lens. Ideal for magnifying your subject for superb close up shots.
  • Movie Clip Mode. Many recent digital cameras also offer the option to capture short video clips.
  • Built-in flash. Essential if you want to take images indoors, at night, or in poor light conditions.
  • If you're really looking for a feature packed model then an increasing range of digital SLR cameras are available. These offer all the flexibility and functionality found on film SLRs, including the option to use interchangeable lenses, and work with a wide range of accessories.

    Buying Your Camera
When buying your camera you should also consider who you are buying it from. If you are buying from an eBay seller who is located outside of the UK also be aware that you may need to pay import tax. If having a valid warranty and being supplied with a UK power supply is important to you, then you are best to pick an eBay seller located in the UK.
