eBay Policy: Contact information in listings

This policy takes effect from 1st May, 2008.

In general, members are permitted to include contact information for the purpose of offering customer support in a listing, eBay Shop page, or any eBay community content, such as blogs, reviews, and guides.

Contact information can be:

  • Email address

  • Phone Number

  • Chat ID or information

However, members are not permitted to:

  • Link to an email or chat client

  • Include contact information for the purpose of soliciting sales outside of normal eBay processes

  • Post contact information in the title, subtitle, item location or images of a listing

Please note that business sellers on eBay.co.uk are required by the Electronic Commerce (EC Directive) Regulations 2002 to display their contact details.

Breaches of this policy may result in a range of actions, including:

  • Listing cancellation

  • Limits on account privileges

  • Account suspension

  • Forfeit of eBay fees on cancelled listings

  • Loss of PowerSeller status

Requirements for business sellers

The Electronic Commerce (EC Directive) Regulations 2002 requires businesses to provide certain information about themselves, including the geographic address at which their business is established.

Sellers operating as a business on eBay.co.uk must clearly display their business name and geographic address in at least one of the following locations:

  • On the View Item page – in the Business Seller Information section

  • On their About Me page

  • On a Shop’s custom page that is no more than one click from their main Shop page.

Please note that:

  • PO Box addresses are not considered to be geographic addresses, and will not be accepted as a valid business address.

  • Businesses choosing to display their name and address on the View Item page must display that information in the Business Seller Information section.  Displaying the name and address in the item description only is insufficient.

  • Businesses should ensure that their address details follow accessibility guidelines.  If an image file is used to display the business address, alternative text (‘ALT text’) containing the business details should be used for that image.  More information on ALT text can be found at: http://www.webcredible.co.uk/user-friendly-resources/web-accessibility/image-alt-text.shtml
