Categorisation of Listings

Items must be listed in the appropriate category. Breaches of this policy may result in a range of actions, including:

  • Listing cancellation

  • Limits on account privileges

  • Account suspension

  • Forfeit of eBay fees on cancelled listings

  • Loss of PowerSeller status

Some Examples
  • A silver necklace should be listed in Jewellery, not Consumer Electronics.

  • A cookbook should be listed in Books, not Sports Memorabilia.

Additional Information

Guidelines for listing items are outlined in the eBay User Agreement.

Why does eBay have this policy?

Listing items in an inappropriate category results in a poor shopping and finding experience for buyers. Incorrect categorisation returns listings in which the buyer may have no interest. It also results in an unlevel playing field for sellers who categorise their items appropriately and may receive fewer potential buyers.
