Putting eBay Shop items on sale

Sales are a great way to promote items in your eBay Shop. You can create sales that are seasonal, for specific holidays, for specific categories, or just to clear out inventory.

Determining discounts

Fixed price listings can be discounted by a percentage amount or by a specific monetary amount. For example, an item selling for £10 can be discounted by 20% or by £2. This means the item is on sale for £8 in both cases.

Price discounts can't be applied to auction-style listings.

You can select a free P&P discount for any listing, including fixed price and auction-style listings. However, please note that this feature isn't available in Markdown Manager. Remember, if you select a free P&P discount, it applies to the first postal service you selected when you listed your item. The free P&P discount doesn't apply to any additional services that you included in your listing.

All items with price discounts can be discounted by 5% to 75%. The sale price of your item will appear as a Buy it now price on the site. Price discounts also show up for buyers with a special look (value pricing and calculated discount) in the following areas:

  • Listings

  • Cross promotions in listings

  • Search results within a Shop

  • Items I'm watching section of My eBay

  • Watched item reminder emails

  • Shops promotion boxes

  • Seller email marketing

Creating and managing sales

You can create and view scheduled, active and inactive sales within your eBay Shop in Markdown Manager. Sales can be scheduled for a later date or rescheduled once they're over.

To create a sale in Markdown Manager:
  1. Go to My eBay > Account, and then select Marketing Tools or Seller Hub > Marketing > Merchandising.

  2. Click Markdown Manager on the left side of the page.

  3. Click Create Sale.

  4. Once you create a sale, you see a confirmation message. If you schedule more than 200 listings in your sale, you'll receive an email to let you know when your sale is created.

To edit a sale in Markdown Manager:
  1. Go to My eBay > Account, and then select Marketing Tools or Seller Hub > Marketing > Merchandising.

  2. Click Markdown Manager on the left side of the page.

  3. View sales and click the corresponding sale name.

Promoting your sales

Promote your sale by sending a customised email to announce your discounted listings to your eBay Shops newsletter subscribers. The number and frequency of emails you can send is based on your subscription limits and other eBay policies.

Creating and editing a promotional email in Markdown Manager

In the Promote your sale section, your first mailing list is selected automatically:

  • If you don't want to send an email to promote your sale, clear the tick box for the mailing list.

  • A one-off email is sent to the mailing lists on the same date and time as the scheduled sale.

  • The edit your email link lets you edit the subject and message fields of your emails.

  • You can edit your promotional emails as long as the sale hasn't started.

Once the sale has begun, the Promote your sale section no longer appears in Markdown Manager's Edit sale page.

If you don't have any mailing lists, the Promote your sale section doesn't appear in the Markdown Manager's Create sale page. Take a step-by-step tutorial about setting up your email mailing lists.

Markdown Manager rules

  • Revising the item price, postage cost or both for an item on the Revise my item page removes the item from a sale.

  • Most sales are processed within an hour.

  • Items can be discounted 5% to 50%.

  • There are minimum and maximum durations for price sales:

    • A fixed price sale can be 1 to 14 days.

    • The minimum duration between sales is 1 day.

  • Sales on auction-style listings are valid until the listing ends.

  • If a listing is already on sale or has bids on it, you won't be able to add a new sale.

  • If you have listings in multiple currencies and choose to discount by an amount (not a percentage), that discount is in the currency of the listings and won't be converted, e.g.

    • A discount entered as '5' will be £5 for UK listings and US$5 in the United States.

  • Sales can be scheduled up to 6 months in advance and we keep sale information for up to 15 months after the end date.

  • If you have bids on an auction-style listing, you can't add or remove a free P&P sale.

Limits to sales in Markdown Manager

Sales in Markdown Manager are limited in these ways:

  • The number of listings you can change in one day is 250 for Basic Shops, 2,500 for Featured Shops and 5,000 for Anchor Shops. Changes include scheduling, editing or adding listings to a sale.

  • A price sale on a fixed price listing can be 1 to 14 days.

  • A listing can only be in 1 active sale at a time, but a listing can exist in multiple scheduled and inactive sales. There must be at least 1 day between sales for a particular listing.
