Building Trust by Reducing Counterfeits - Frequently Asked Questions

eBay is committed to preventing the sale of counterfeit and other unlawful goods on our platform.  Such items are illegal, and every time a buyer on eBay purchases a counterfeit item, the whole eBay marketplace pays a price.  eBay’s success as a business depends on climate of community confidence. The presence of counterfeit goods on the eBay platform undermines the eBay Community’s confidence and harms no only the consumers, but also legitimate sellersand eBay.

In order to help maintain a safe trading environment, selling restrictions are occasionally placed on accounts (e.g., in connection with certain categories or types of goods that eBay understands from brand owners historically have been targeted by counterfeiters). These selling limits are not specific to any one account, and effect selling practices more broadly.

1. Why is eBay implementing new restrictions?

eBay is committed to reducing fraud and negative buying experiences on the site.  In order to help maintain a safe trading environment, restrictions are occasionally put in place (e.g., in connection with certain categories or types of goods that eBay understands from brand owners historically have been targeted by counterfeiters).

2. Why are we requiring certain sellers to be PayPal verified?

The PayPal Verification process is a way for eBay to gain additional assurance regarding a member's identity. This added verification is designed to reduce fraud, other unlawful activities, and negative buying experience on eBay.

Note: Becoming PayPal verified doesn’t mean you are required to offer PayPal as a payment option in your listing(s).

3. How do I become PayPal Verified?

There are two ways to become PayPal verified:

  • Add and confirm your bank account.

  • Get approved for a PayPal Plus Credit Card or PayPal Buyer Credit.

For further information, read Becoming Verified on PayPal.

4. Why do I need to have been a registered eBay member for a period of time in order to sell these items?

eBay may require sellers to be registered for a minimum period of time in order to sell certain items. These added security measures are designed to give sellers time to build a positive track record with buyers; which is an essential part of the eBay experience.

5. Will one and three-day listings no longer be available on eBay?

One and three-day listings will continue to be available in certain categories. In some instances sellers may not be able to list using the one or three-day auction format. This is done in an effort to prevent potential abuses of these short auction times, and in order to help assist law enforcement authorities and rights owners.

6. May I get the selling restrictions removed from my account?

Sellers who have a good track record on our site and are confident in the authenticity and origin of their items may be eligible to have their selling limits increased. Our considerations for determining whether to increase selling limits include, among other factors:

  • Positive buyer feedback

  • No unresolved disputes with buyers

  • Selling history (minimum three months) and activity as a seller on the site

  • Absence of feedback concerning the authenticity of the item(s)

  • PayPal verified

  • Compliance with eBay policies

  • General good standing of the account

Please review your account to see if you meet the above factors; if you feel you qualify, email us and we’ll be happy to review your account.
