Why did you launch a shopping basket?
Today's online buyers are used to having a shopping basket to add items to during their shopping session and then pay in one easy checkout. It can actually encourage buyers to consider other items before checking out and buy more with each visit. The new eBay shopping basket allows them to purchase both auction-style and fixed price items.
What makes the new eBay shopping basket unique?
The eBay shopping basket has been uniquely designed to work with both fixed price and auction-style listings. It also allows the buyer to buy from different sellers using different payment methods. Coming later in 2012, sellers will be able to take advantage of a powerful new merchandising platform to help cross-sell products.
My friend can use the eBay shopping basket. Why can't I see one?
We're currently introducing the shopping basket to all eBay users and it will take a few days for this to be completed and for you to see the Add to basket button on the listing page.
Why is there also a Buy it now button?
Buyers told us they still wanted to be able to purchase a single item through the Buy it now flow in certain cases. We plan to improve that flow in the future to make it easier and faster.
How does eBay's shopping basket work for fixed price and auction-style items?
On fixed price listings, you'll see a new Add to basket button. Buyers simply click this button to add items to their basket. Auction-style listings are automatically added to a buyer's basket once they place a bid. Buyers can add items from the same or different sellers to their basket. They can check out and pay for all the items in their basket at once, or check out on selected items and save others for later - for example, an auction-style listing that hasn't yet ended.

Buyers can access their eBay shopping basket from the top of any page on eBay for quick checkout.

Can buyers pay for items from more than one seller or different types of transactions in one payment?
If items from different sellers all accept the same payment method (such as PayPal), then the buyer can pay for all these items in the eBay shopping basket with a single payment. They can also pay for different types of transactions (won auction-style listings, fixed price and Best Offer items) at the same time.
How can I try the eBay shopping basket?
You can opt in as a buyer for your own purchases - a limited number of buyers can opt in to try it out at the moment. However, as a seller, you can't opt in or out of having your items added to the eBay shopping basket.
Are there any items that can't be added to the eBay shopping basket?
Yes. Items listed in the following categories can't be added to the eBay shopping basket: all Motors listings (Vehicles), Property listings, classified format listings and international items listed in foreign currencies.
When do I actually own the item?
You're not committed as a buyer until you pay. Fixed price items that you've added to your basket but not paid for remain available for other buyers to purchase. Whoever checks out and pays first gets the item. (This is different to clicking 'Buy it now' to secure an item, and paying for it later on.) And as always, if you bid on an auction-style item, you're committed to purchase if you win.
How does eBay's shopping basket work for fixed price items?
On fixed price listings, you'll see a new Add to basket button. Simply click this button to add items to your basket. You're not committed until you pay.

You can add items from the same or different sellers to your basket. You can check out and pay for all the items in your basket at once, or check out on selected items and save others for later.

How does eBay's shopping basket work for auction-style items?
Auction-style listings are automatically added to your basket once you place a bid. You won't be able to pay unless you win the item. The price of the auction-style item won't be included in your shopping basket totals until the listing ends.

Once the listing's ended, the item will remain in your basket until you pay for it (if you won), or remove it (if you didn't win). Each type of listing is clearly labelled (outbid, unsuccessful auction-style listing, etc.) so that you know what you need to do next.

Can I redeem my voucher in the eBay shopping basket?
If you have a voucher, you can redeem it by clicking Proceed to checkout from the shopping basket page.
My item is not valid in the eBay shopping basket any more. What happened?
A few things may have happened:
  • eBay may have ended the listing

  • The seller may have ended the item

  • Another buyer may have seen the same item as you and committed themselves to buying it before you had a chance to

  • The item may have ended naturally

How do I continue shopping after I added an item to my eBay shopping basket?
You have a few options:
  • Click the Continue shopping button at the bottom right of the basket page

  • Use the search box at the top of the page

  • Click the Back button in your browser to go back to the listing page.

What's the benefit of using the eBay shopping basket rather than my Watch list?
The eBay shopping basket allows you to compare many items at the same time and see the total cost, including postage, before checkout. It also allows you to pay for multiple items from multiple sellers at the same time.
How many items can I add to the eBay shopping basket?
The current limit is 100. We'll re-evaluate this after launch.
Can I use the eBay shopping basket on other eBay sites like eBay.com or eBay.de?
At the moment the eBay shopping basket can only be used on eBay.co.uk for items listed on the eBay.co.uk site, or on eBay.com for items listed on the eBay.com site. Items that are listed on other eBay sites and appear in search results can be purchased as regular Buy it now items.
Can I add items from different sellers to my eBay shopping basket?
Yes. You can add items from more than one seller to your eBay shopping basket, and you can pay for all of them at once if all the sellers accept the same payment method. Each item will show up as a separate purchase with its own item number and the seller's user ID, exactly as it does today in My eBay. If you add multiple items from the same seller, the seller's items are grouped together within your basket.
Can I remove items from my eBay shopping basket?
Yes. There is a 'Remove' link below each item in the basket. You can remove any item, except auction-style listings that you've won, and Best Offers that have been accepted. These can't be removed because you've already committed to pay for the item. Fixed price items automatically disappear once they show as paid within My eBay. They will still be available in My eBay for the same period of time as they are today.

If you're outbid on an auction-style listing, you're free to remove the item from your eBay shopping basket or bid again.

How do I request an invoice?
You can either request an invoice directly from the eBay shopping basket page, or on the first page after you've clicked Proceed to checkout. You'll see a request total button in the shopping basket if there are at least 2 items from one seller or if one of the items has unspecified P&P.
Why is the item still in my basket after I paid for it?
If you paid an item with an offline payment method like cheque or bank transfer, eBay doesn't know when the payment goes through. The item will still show up in your shopping basket until you or the seller mark the item as paid in My eBay.
How do I get the eBay shopping basket into my Shop?
The eBay shopping basket is not available for customisation into eBay Shops. Buyers will be able to use the shopping basket to shop with all sellers.
How does combined P&P work with the eBay shopping basket?
Combined postage discounts will continue to work as they do on the site today. Buyers will see any applicable discounts reflected in the shopping basket.

Because items are grouped by seller in the eBay shopping basket, any relevant combined P&P rules and discounts will be applied. These will be displayed prominently in the basket, to help highlight savings to the buyer. You should specify promotional combined P&P rules and discounts in My eBay (and not just in the item description text) to make checkout more efficient for buyers.

How will merchandising work in the eBay shopping basket?
The new eBay shopping basket provides a powerful platform for generating add-on purchases from buyers. We're still developing merchandising functionality and we'll be adding it to the basket over time once the roll-out is completed, and sharing best practices for successful cross-merchandising.
If my buyer uses the eBay shopping basket to make a purchase from me, will I see or experience anything different?
No. For you as a seller, the experience will be the same as it is today. In fact, some of your buyers may have already purchased from you using the eBay shopping basket.
How does the eBay shopping basket help eliminate unpaid items for fixed price listings? What if a buyer adds an item to their basket and doesn't check it out?
In the eBay shopping basket, buyers can no longer commit to purchase your fixed price listings without paying for them first. Fixed price items added to a buyer's basket but not paid for remain available for other buyers to purchase - your listing stays active until payment is sent.
Do I need to use immediate payment with the eBay shopping basket?
With the eBay shopping basket, all your fixed price listings act as immediate payment listings for buyers who are using the shopping basket, regardless of whether you listed with immediate payment.

We recommend you use immediate pay on your fixed price and Buy it now listings. Immediate payment will still apply to buyers who are not yet using the eBay shopping basket and - if you sell internationally - on other eBay sites where the eBay shopping basket is not yet available.

Can I opt out of having my items being added to the eBay shopping basket?
No, there is no way to opt out of eBay shopping basket as a seller.
What does the buyer do if I haven't specified postage on an item?
If you haven't specified postage charges for an item and the buyer wants to check out with that item using the eBay shopping basket, they'll need to request an invoice from you with the postage amount included. Buyers can do this by clicking the 'Request total from seller' link next to the seller's ID in their shopping basket.

As always, the best practice is to specify postage for all your markets, so that the correct rate is automatically quoted based on the buyer's location.

What do I need to do to prepare my listings for the eBay shopping basket?
You don't need to do anything to prepare your listings for the eBay shopping basket. Just follow the best practices below to make it easy for buyers to check out.
How can I use the eBay shopping basket to increase my sales?
All of the same best practices for increasing sales still apply. Some best practices - especially those around postage - are even more important. For example:
  • Offer promotional combined P&P to drive more purchases

Promotional postage discounts will be highlighted in the shopping basket and linked to your other items. Get your discounts to show in the shopping basket with the eBay postage discount tool (in the Site Preferences section in My eBay).

  • Offer multi-quantity and longer duration on your fixed price listing

The longer you list an item and the higher the quantity of the item you want to sell, the longer it will be available in your buyer's shopping basket. Use multi-quantity and long duration listings to a give buyers more time to purchase.

  • Offer more than one delivery method and specify P&P costs to all locations

Buyers are more likely to buy from you when the total amount including postage is clearly specified in the shopping basket. Specify costs on every delivery method you offer, including costs for international delivery.

Can I tell when a buyer adds one of my items to their eBay shopping basket?
No. If a buyer adds one of your items to their basket, you won't be notified until they check out.
I opted out of eBay's multi-seller checkout. What happens to my listings with the eBay shopping basket?
Because purchasing items from more than one seller in one shopping session is central to the eBay shopping basket, sellers will no longer be able to opt out of multi-seller checkout. This preference will be removed from My eBay in the coming months.
