Understanding eBay’s Role

If you're having problems with an item you've bought, the 'Report a Problem' information can help you quickly understand how to resolve issues and is a good place to start. Otherwise, please read on for more information about eBay's role in disputes.

Our goal is to promote a safe place for our members to buy and sell. When transaction problems happen, we provide assistance by making communication between eBay members easier and by providing services to help protect you against fraud.

What we do
  • When suspicious activity is reported, our Trust and Safety team investigates the situation. We will warn, suspend, or otherwise restrict accounts that breach our policies.

  • We provide members with an easy way to request contact information and communicate directly with people they trade with.

  • We help with dispute resolution by providing our members with an online tool to report and track their disputes using the dispute console.

  • We work closely with PayPal to help buyers and sellers resolve their transaction problems. If you have paid with PayPal, you may file a complaint through PayPal's Buyer Complaint Process. For all other items, we provide an item not received or significantly not as described process.

  • We offer purchase protection: PayPal Buyer Protection offers up to £500 in Purchase Protection for eligible items paid for with PayPal.

  • We co-operate fully with all legal investigations.

The Police and other government agencies can report information to eBay using our specific online form.
Note: This method of contact is for the use of the Police and government agencies only.
If you need to contact eBay about your own account, please contact us.

What we don't do
  • We're unable to take action on a member's behalf. This includes contacting a member directly to ask about the status of an item.

  • As we're not involved in the actual transaction, we can't force a member to meet their obligation.
