Reporting and Tracking Disputes

We understand that it’s never a pleasant experience to have a problem with a transaction. Often, the easiest way to resolve a problem is by communicating with your trading partner. For information on how to contact your trading partner, see Contacting eBay Members.

However, if you continue to have a problem, you can report this problem through our dispute console in My eBay. The dispute console is an online communication tool which help you track, manage, and resolve your dispute as quickly as possible.

Report a dispute

As a buyer you can: As a seller you can:
  • Report that you have not received payment for an item to eBay and your buyer.

  • Communicate with your buyer to find a solution. For more information, see unpaid item process.

Buyers can only open a dispute through the specific eBay country site where the item was purchased. Eligibility for buyer protection services is determined by the payment method that you use and the eBay country site where the item was purchased. You can review how your purchase is protected on the item page.

Note: For both reports you need to provide the item number of the transaction. The item number appears on the top right corner of the item page.

To report a dispute:
  1. Click the “My eBay” link at the top of the eBay home page.

  2. On the left-hand side of the page under My eBay Views, click the “Dispute Console” link.

  3. On the Dispute Console page, select the problem you want to report by clicking the “Report an Unpaid Item” link or “Report an Item Not Received or Not as Described” link.

  4. Provide the item number and follow the instructions on the report pages.

View the status of your dispute

The Dispute Console offers two views:

  • Unpaid Items

  • Items not received or significantly not as described

To select a view on the Dispute Console page, click the tabs on the overview page.

Each dispute is organised into columns, detailing the date it was opened, the other party’s User ID, if your action is needed, and the dispute status. The dispute status tells you if the dispute is open or closed, and whether you need to take action on it. You can view the entire dispute by clicking the “View dispute” link.

In the unpaid item view there’s an additional column which shows whether or not the item is eligible for a final value fee credit, or if credit has already been granted.

Closing a dispute

To close a dispute:

  • Go to My eBay.

  • Under the "My eBay Views" section on the left side of the page, click the "Dispute Console" link.

  • On your Dispute Console Overview, click the "View dispute" link next to the item that you want to close.

Note: If you close an unpaid item dispute when there is no tick, you will not receive credit for the item

  • On the dispute page, click the "Close Dispute" link and select the reason that you are closing the dispute

Leaving Feedback

After you file a dispute, we encourage you to leave Feedback for the transaction. Please be honest, fair, and factual. This will help make other members aware of your experience and help keep eBay a safe place to buy and sell.

The Feedback Score of buyers and sellers who were involved in a dispute reported through our dispute console is not automatically affected.
