Package Type
If you choose 1st class or 1st class Recorded (Signed for) services please note that you need to specify the correct package type based on Royal Mail's Pricing in Proportion guidelines:
- Letter
- Size - Not to exceed 240 millimetres x 165 millimetres. (This size is larger than A5 - half a sheet of standard paper.)
- Maximum Thickness - 5 millimetres
- Weight - 0-100 grams (0.1kg)
- Large Letter
- Size - Not to exceed 353 millimetres x 250 millimetres. (This size is larger than A4 - a standard sheet of paper, e.g., single CDs and DVDs.)
- Maximum thickness - 25 millimetres
- Weight - 0-750 grams (0.75kg)
- Packet
- Size - Any item which is more than 25 millimetres thick or longer than 353 millimetres or wider than 250 millimetres, or heavier than 750 grams
- Weight exceeds 750 grams
The maximum dimensions for rectangular items are 610 millimetres x 460 millimetres x 460 millimetres. The maximum length for rolled items is 900 millimetres and the length plus twice the item diameter must not exceed 1040 millimetres. Inland items over these dimensions should be sent by Standard Parcels or using Parcelforce Worldwide. For further information on Royal Mail weight and size limits, please visit www.Royal Mail.com.
For Parcelforce Worldwide services covering the UK (Parcelforce 24 and Parcelforce 48), the maximum weight is 30kg. The maximum length is 1.5m, and maximum combined length and girth (girth being the measurement all the way round the parcel) is 3m. For international services (International Datapost and Global Priority), these are generally the same, but there are some destinations where the maximum weight is 20kg, length 2m and combined length/girth of 2m. Further details about specific destinations are available on www.parcelforce.com/countries. It is essential that you check this before you send your item to prevent any problems when your parcel is collected, or you drop into a Post Office ®.
Postage Options
There are a number of postage options which vary according to the Royal Mail or Parcelforce Worldwide service that the user wants to use. Print Postage Label is designed to allow printing and purchasing of a label to be easy and intuitive regardless of the chosen service.
- 'Display Value'
Why use the 'Display Value'?
Sellers can choose for the value or the weight of a label to be displayed when the label is printed.
Examples of Use
By selecting Display Value = Yes, the price of the label will be printed and by selecting 'No' the weight will be printed. If the seller selects 1st class labels or 1st class Recorded (Signed for) labels then the pricing in proportion package type will also be displayed ("Ltr" = letter, "LLtr" = Large Letter and "Pkt" = Packet)
- Basic Compensation and Additional Compensation
Royal Mail 1st class, 1st class Recorded (Signed for), Standard Parcels and AirMail provide a basic level of compensation at no cost which means that if the item is not delivered by Royal Mail then you will be able to make a claim for compensation up to the limit of basic compensation offered for the service. No claims will be honoured without an authorised certificate of posting. Parcelforce Worldwide provide inclusive compensation for loss/damage for all four services up to £150 per item.
In order to make your Royal Mail claim for 1st class, Standard Parcels and AirMail services, please note that you will need to have your Certificate of Posting (automatically generated by PayPal) stamped at the Post Office® counter. Your claim will then be investigated to see whether you are entitled to receive compensation if the item is not received.
- Why select Additional Compensation?
When sending higher value items you can protect against risk of loss or damage by purchasing additional compensation for certain Royal Mail and Parcelforce Worldwide services.
For all four Parcelforce Worldwide services (inland and International) and selected Royal Mail services (Standard Parcels, Special Delivery 9am and Special Delivery Next Day and Airsure) sellers can purchase additional compensation up to £2500.

h) The Basics of good packaging:
Wrap each item in the parcel/packet individually
This takes a little longer, but offers better protection when there's no movement of contents. Place all items within an inner packet/box and wrap them in bubble wrap. When sending printers, ink cartridges must be removed from the printer and packaged separately in a manner that cannot contaminate any other item.
Protect fragile items on their journey
Fill out containers with cushioning material like expanded polystyrene chips; polythene foam; bubble wrap air cushions or crumpled paper. Make sure this fill is around all items to form a good cushion against knocks and vibration. Please ensure that polyblock surrounds are used on all electrical items. Cushioning materials are available from most Post Office ® branches. Use a 'FRAGILE' sticker, if necessary.
Use a strong outer container
All items must be packed - unpacked items with labels stuck on are not acceptable, and may be refused. Make sure the outer container is strong enough for it's contents. For smaller items, use padded envelopes for sharp edges or odd shapes. For parcels, a corrugated fibreboard box with a good quality kraft outer wrapping is best. Sub-standard and damaged cartons can cause problems.
Seal the parcel/packet well
Make an 'H' seal with 48mm/50mm-wide plastic or reinforced carton tape on both the top and bottom of your package. Ordinary household adhesive tape isn't usually strong enough. Flatten any sharp edge from staples or metal fastenings, and cover with tape.
Strap and tape for extra protection
For heavier items you will need a strong outer carton, closed with tape. String around boxes isn't really suitable, but can be used around other wrappings.
Transporting electrical items
When transporting electrical items - e.g. laptops, DVD players etc - please make sure that they have the original manufacturer's transport screws properly secured to ensure that elements/components do not move.
Do not strap multiple boxes together
This may cause them to become damaged. Place all boxes in one outer carton
Prevent movement of items in transit
Please ensure that multiple items within a packet/parcel do not touch each other, or the sides of the container. Guitars and other musical instruments should be packaged in a hard case with sufficient internal packaging to ensure that the instrument cannot move during transit
Is the carton strong enough?
The table below may help you choose the most suitable carton material. The letters 'gsm' are the standard measurement for paper/card thickness. For parcels, we also recommend an inner cushioning lining of at least 50mm as further protection against damage.
A compensation claim for damage of contents will be deemed invalid if the item is inadequately packed or if the packaging is not retained for verification.
| Weight of contents |
Grade of carton |
| Up to 5kg |

| 5kg-10kg |

Clear, accurate addressing
Using the full address and postcode/zip code is essential to ensure correct delivery. The phone number of the recipient also helps to avoid any delay. Include your own address and phone number on the outside and inside of your item too.
Please note that if items are badly packaged, they may be refused by the Post Office ® or by the Parcelforce Worldwide driver if the collection option is selected. In addition, bad packaging may invalidate any claim for damage – so please take the time to pack your items very carefully.
For more packaging tips please visit the Parcelforce Worldwide website.
