SOPHIE'S WORLD

Disco queen Sophie Ellis-Bextor talks costumes, charity shops and why she’ll never be seen in a crop top!

Written by Lara Myall, contributing fashion and beauty director

What’s your fashion mantra?

Don’t take fashion too seriously - it’s only getting dressed in the morning! If I go out feeling a bit ridiculous then I won’t wear it again.

How does your everyday wardrobe differ from your stage costumes?

When it comes to the stage I exploit the fact I can be larger than life. The first outfit I wear on tour — a vintage Dirndl, milk maid-inspired dress - is an eBay purchase. I had it altered and embroidered to reflect my album’s folkloric feel.

Where do you shop?

Online, in vintage clothing stores and on the high street. We’re so lucky there’s so many affordable places to buy fashion. The high street is phenomenal.

How do you mix up designer, vintage and high street?

It’s not as considered as that. If I have items I love, no matter where I find them, they make me feel good.

It must be tricky juggling the school run with work, what do you wear?

There are days when I feel like day-to-night Barbie. I’m not smart but I’ll throw on a dress. I get a lot of pleasure putting on a cheerful outfit in the morning. If I wear something too dressed down it makes me feel like the day never started.

And in terms of shoes?

I wear ankle boots or little heels but they have to be practical because I have three little boys. I also like taking the tube and running down escalators.

Heels vs brogues?

I own both but heels when I go out. I like sparkly shoes and heels with straps that won’t fly off when I’m dancing. But I’d style up a cute playsuit or dress with brogues for a tomboy look.

How do you accessorise?

I tend to scale everything back. If you pile on accessories it can look too put together.

How do you navigate the trends?

I flick through fashion magazines and keep my eye on the trends but now I’m 35 I know myself so well. I sift through them and select elements that suit me.

Which spring/summer colours and prints get your vote?

I love bright colours, like jewel tones, and also pastels. But muted murky tones make me look unwell. I also like cheery vintage-inspired prints and bold florals. I tend to clash them without thinking about it.

Are there any trends or pieces you refuse to wear?

I’m not brilliant in trousers or body-con dresses. And anything that bares a midriff, like the crop top, is not for me — I like to keep my tummy under wraps.

Are you a mini, midi or maxi fan?

I’m happy to get my pins out, and the midi skirt can look sweet with flats but maxis look wrong. I’m nearly 5’9 and clothes off the peg often aren’t the right length.

What are your top tips for taller ladies, like yourself?

For taller folk I would say don't be apologetic about your height. I have lots of tall, beautiful girlfriends and they have wonderful long legs and great silhouettes, so wear those heels, short skirts and playsuits with pride!

Which pieces in your wardrobe make you smile?

When the sun’s shining you’ll find me in '80s-style rompersuits. I have a stripey all-in-one that makes me look like Andy Pandy. There’s also a few items that Grayson Perry probably owns too.

What's your ultimate styling trick?

Wear pieces that fit your form and define your silhouette with a belt. Take the odd risk, have fun and wear an outfit that enhances your day.

If you could only wear one trend for the rest of your life what would it be?

Anything '60s-esque. Shift dresses with embellished necklines look cute in the day with flats and glam with killer heels at night. It's just an effortless way to dress around the clock.
