Who sells on eBay?
The truly great thing about eBay is that it's for everyone, from college students supplementing their grant, to stay-at-home mums, entrepreneurs and Silver Surfers.
But don't take it from us read what our members have to say about their personal eBay journeys:
“CHANGE WITH THE SEASONS”
Carrie Hards from London has the perfect routine for selling on eBay.
In Carrie’s house, it’s obvious when the seasons are changing – Carrie goes selling on eBay. As one season ends and the next one begins, Carrie takes a look round her home for things she’s not really using any more. She says it’s like a detox. And, of course, it earns her money to buy fresh new stuff. Carrie calls it her ‘Seasonal Sort Out’. Sounds like she’s got it well and truly sorted!
“FUND YOUR HABIT”
Tamsin Rice, 26, from Plymouth is one of a growing number of people who have turned to eBay to do their entire Christmas shopping.
Married with two young children, Tamsin decided to start selling old baby clothes on the site to give her self a sense of contributing to the household income. Before long she started selling other items she no longer needed and had raised enough money to complete her entire Xmas shopping. Given the practical restrictions of wheeling a double buggy around the shops, eBay was fantastic.
“eBay SAVED ME!”
Daventry based Luise Johnston, 39, has been trading on eBay since 2003 and credits the website with having saved her from insanity.
A few years ago, Luise was a senior teacher at a large secondary school but was forced to give up her career due to a severe disability. Unable to work, Luise threw herself into her hobbies, particularly her interest in Betty Boop. As it is very hard to find Betty Boop memorabilia in the UK, Luise turned to eBay and suddenly found that she was able to buy a range of Betty Boop items from around the globe.
Now an eBay power seller, Luise sells Betty Boop related products to people as far away as Australia. She was surprised at the appetite for such items and has made a number of close friends through selling to other Betty Boop fans, some of whom have even been to visit her. Given Luise’s condition, and the difficulties she faces in maintaining an active social life, this is particularly significant.
“A PENSION IN PORCELAIN”
Like many mature citizens, George Crudgington and his partner Joyce Bailey found themselves in the unfortunate position of being over 50 without a pension. So they turned to eBay and began trading in 1998 where they initially sold stamps, toy soldiers and ceramics. They then branched out into selling Royal Doulton and profitable from day one, their company now has a six-figure turnover per annum.
Keen to share their success they also hold seminars educating other mature citizens about the fruits of their labours and how to create a business through eBay.co.uk.
The success of their eBay business has meant that they have been able to buy a villa in France!
