FOOD FOR THOUGHT

KLC School of Design trains students to be professional interior designers and decorators. In recent years KLC graduates have received recognition from the Interior Decorators and Designers Association – with two gold medal awards in 1998 and 1999. At the Daily Telegraph / House & Garden Fair 2000, graduates of KLC's full-time Diploma Course were given the opportunity, courtesy of Marks & Spencer, to design four roomsets.

This year, the roomsets are themed From Morning 'til Night in the Millennium - Breakfast, Lunch, Tea and Dinner

Breakfast

Breakfast was designed by Joanna Green and Frances Hutchings. The room is wonderfully discreet and elegant, providing an understated framework for the clean architectural pieces of furniture. The use of colour and material is restrained, further emphasising the room's simplicity. An imaginative use of mirror glass walls creates a feeling of space and accentuate the symmetry of the room.

To create this look, search for furniture with simple lines and offset with bold modern prints or paintings

Lunch

Lunch

Blaithnaid Behan has designed a multifunctional room for Lunch, incorporating dining and other functions such as study/sitting room and will include interesting ideas for preparing/serving food. Freestanding furniture will be low and include a daybed and low-level table.

The designer has created most of the furniture herself, but you could echo the retro styling with square, chunky furniture and lots of chrome! Chic, contemporary glassware and plain white china helps to create an atmosphere of sophistication. You could even add a spot of old world charm with a carefully chosen antique piece.

Tea

Tea, as a meal in its own right, survives as a relic of a more leisured time. Richard Spark has created a futuristic salon for a 21st century Madame Pompadour; transforming the role of such a formal ceremony to fit in with tomorrow's high tech and busy world.

The choice of furniture in this room is delicate and feminine with a thoroughly modern twist. The tea table is central to his scheme: look for a pretty tea set that displays your tempting morsels to their full advantage.

Dinner

Designed by Katrine Bradley, Dinner is an elegant affair. There is a subtle mix of timeless antiques, texture and unusual accessories such as feathers and pale ice birch. The classical style of furniture, framed master paintings and silver gilt mirror contrast with the contemporary look of tanned leather floor tiles. There is fine white china and coloured glass set on a beautiful antique wood table. Stone, iron, leather and wool are used in various forms creating an atmosphere of relaxed sophistication within an opulent setting designed to whet the 21st century appetite.
