Model and beauty expert Millie Mackintosh reveals her spring/summer must-haves and top tricks for nailing the new-season trends
Written by Lara Myall, contributing fashion and beauty director
How would you define your Unique Style Personality?
I’m a free spirit with a boho edge.
What’s your earliest fashion memory?
I used to love dressing up. Half my dressing up box was costumes and the other half had all my mum’s old clothes from the ‘80s.
What’s your failsafe dress code?
Ankle boots, skinny jeans, blouse, scarf, leather jacket and hat. Depending on the weather I’ll layer up with knits. And a big bag to fit my laptop, make-up and diary.
Do you and your husband, Professor Green swap styling tips?
We both ask if something looks okay. Sometimes he’ll say: "No, that really doesn’t go babe", and I think it does. Women will understand there are some pieces, like peasant blouses or midi skirts that boys don’t get.
Talking of midi skirts, how do you wear yours?
I prefer high waists and pencil shapes because they flatter my figure. I team mine with a silk cami, belt, chunky wedges and a floppy hat for a real vintage look.
Which other trends are hot on your radar?
White lace and crochet. They’re trends I’ll keep in my wardrobe forever. I can’t wait to wear them with the new pastel shades and a tan. I like the drop-waist pep-hem skirt too. It reminds me of the ra ra trend from when I was a teenager, which terrifies me a little. But as long as it’s not too short it can look sophisticated.
How do you feel about the ubiquitous crop top?
I’m loving it with high-waisted jeans and heels. There’s something sexy about revealing the upper part of your stomach.
Which summer jackets get your vote?
One of my favourites is the biker jacket. I own about 10 and there’s lots of colours around this season. Bikers in lemon yellow look so fresh.
What’s your must-have accessory of the season?
Hats. I wear trilbies, fedoras and floppy styles with everything. I’ll match my hat to my boots to pull a look together.
How do you accessorise am to pm?
Stacking rings and a chunky collar necklace over a shirt for everyday. And statement earrings with a bandeau dress to show off bare shoulders by night
Any tricks for updating your wardrobe for spring/summer?
Change the way you pair things already in your wardrobe. Try clashing prints, wear a jacket over your shoulders or add socks to shoes.
How do you change up your look for work and play?
I’ll take one staple, like a tailored navy jacket and mix it up. So for meetings I’ll wear it with smarter trousers or a skirt. And then off-duty I’ll pair it with distressed jeans, heels and a slick of lipstick, like Olivia Palermo.
Would you say you’re a ‘less is more’ kind of girl?
Yes. I only ever work one pop of colour into my outfit, never head to toe. But when it comes to white lace, more is more!
What’s the best way to shop?
With friends. They’re honest and tell me if something works or not. I always find the most amazing buys when I have my good luck charms with me — although not so lucky on the credit card.
Have you ever had fashion envy with friends?
Only when we really want the same item! Seriously, it doesn’t bother me. I often go for cocktails with Rosie Fortescue (of Made in Chelsea) in matching outfits — it’s such fun being style twins.
And your final pearls of fashion wisdom?
Don’t conform to what the supermodels are wearing, dress for you and your shape. Take inspiration from the trends, be selective and it might inspire the way you dress for the rest of your life.
