Nervous About Getting Started on eBay

ARE YOU NERVOUS ABOUT GETTING STARTED ON EBAY?

Buying and selling on the exciting, fun and vibrant eBay marketplace is one of the most exhilarating and unique ways you can spend your time online. Remember: hundreds of millions of eBayers visit our sites around the world, and only a small minority experience problems, so whilst alerting you to the potential pitfalls, we don't want you to stay awake at night worrying, or miss out on the fun!

We realise that eBay can occasionally be intimidating, particularly if you are new, so we've pulled together the following information to help set your mind at rest.

Password Safety
Once you've signed up, you're ready to buy and sell on eBay. We've set up separate guides for Buying Safely and Selling Safely. It's a good idea to read these in advance to make sure you know how to protect yourself.

In addition, it's important you choose a safe password, and don't share it with anyone else. If you must share it, make sure it is with someone you can trust implicitly. Remember: you are responsible for all actions taken with your User ID and password, including those actions that result in fees being charged to your account.

Signing Up and Entering Personal Details
In general, you can browse the site without telling us who you are or revealing any personal information about yourself. If you choose to sign up to eBay, we may ask you to provide contact and identity information, financial information and other personal information as necessary, depending on which area of the site you want to use.

Where possible, we indicate which fields are required and which fields are optional. You always have the option not to provide information by choosing not to use a particular service or feature.

Please bear in mind that once you are registered on eBay, we do collect certain information, based on what you do on the site. However, this is perfectly safe, and we would not pass these details on to a third party without your prior consent. Full details of this can be found in our privacy policy.

Also, rest assured that eBay will never sell or rent your personal information to third parties for their marketing purposes without your explicit consent.

Submitting your credit card details
There are two places where eBay may ask you for your credit card details, and one where PayPal may ask for them. The first place on eBay is when you register for a seller's account. Here you may be asked to enter your credit card details for verification purposes. Please rest assured that we use very secure technology to transmit your details, that we use them in this instance for verification purposes only, and that we will never share your credit card details with anybody else.

The other place on eBay is if you choose to pay your seller's fees by credit card. Once again, we use very secure technology to transmit your details, we use them in this instance only for collecting your seller fees, and we will never share your credit card details with anybody else.

PayPal will ask you to enter credit card details if you choose credit card as one of the ways to transfer money to your PayPal account. As with eBay, PayPal uses the latest technology to keep your details safe, uses them only when you say so and will not share your details with anybody else.

Getting help if things go wrong
In the unlikely even that you have a problem with a transaction, we first advise that you contact your buyer or seller directly to try and resolve the issue, as many problems can be resolved with direct contact.

However, if that doesn't work, you can click the Help button that appears at the top of every eBay page and browse or search for the topic you need help with. If you still have questions, you might want to consult the members who log onto our discussion boards in the Answer Centre - it is unlikely that you are the first member to experience such a problem, and a more experienced eBayer might be able to help out.

Otherwise, our customer support specialists are on hand 24 hours a day, seven days a week, to answer your questions. Contact Us, and we will do our best to answer your question or resolve your problem as quickly and accurately as possible.
